>> reporter: two teenagers seriously injured when their car slams right into a tree. we'll tell you what we know about their conditions -- coming up. people living in one south bay neighborhood are told to stay indoors. ktvu was the only news crew on the scene early this morning. and now there's a major new development. >> reporter: we're live in san francisco where police are trying to figure out how a man sleeping in an alley under a

freeway was brutally attacked. and it's a day to remember the americans who gave their life for their country. how the bay area and the nation is marking this memorial day 2013. "mornings on 2" begins right now. good morning. it's monday, may 27th, memorial day. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> good morning. i'm tori campbell. let's begin with weather and traffic. steve, there's rain that's already started? >> yes, up in the north, mendocino. this is later than sooner unless you are watching up north. it's already there. for us a lot of cloud cover today. cloudy to mostly cloudy. rain or very light rain for the coast. 60s or low 70s. here's sal. >> right now, traffic at the bay bridge toll plaza is light. we're not expecting a big crowd today. it's the holiday. be careful there's enforcement from police agencies all over

the place. this is the commute at 8800, which is doing well -- 880, which is doing well. back to the desk. quite a wake upfor a -- for a san jose neighborhood when a car crashed into a ee. alex savidge is live with more. >> reporter: good morning. these were two teenagers, the young man and young riding in this car you see behind us here. it plowed right into a tree hee on alum -- here on alum rock and white. firefighters got here quickly. there is a fire station across the street. this car slammed into the tree at about 2:45. the car car soft control going at a very fast rate of speed according to police. that tree came crashing down on top of the car. san jose firefighters came in here. they had to first remove the

tree, cut it apart and then they removed the jaws of life to free those two teens in the car. both of them with major injuries. i'm told by an officer here on scene that the boy, in all likelihood will lose his foot. we don't know the conditions or whether they will survive this crash. mrs. telling me they are still trying -- police telling me they still trying to identify these teenagers. you can see the damage done here. very serious crash. two teenagers, seriously hurt here this morning and police are still trying to figure out if alcohol may have played a role. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. new this morning, one person is in custody after an overnight search in a san jose neighborhood. police actualwy went door to door for several hours early this morning on berryessa road searching for a man suspected of pointing a gun at a security guard and then leading police on a short chase. police found the car abandoned in the field and they searched for the man on berryessa road.

again, police do have one person in custody. that person is being questioned. just hours before that search, firefighters were called out to the area for a fire at a homeless encampment. right there. it started about 4:00 yesterday afternoon behind an apartment complex on north king road. firefighters are investigating the cause of the fire. it's been a deadly night on the streets of san jose. police are investigating the shooting deaths of three people in just four hours. now, ktvu's janine de la vega spoke to one person who actually heard those gunshots. janine will join us at 7:30. right now, 7:04. we're following developing news in san francisco where a man was found critically injured. ktvu's tara moriarty is on the scene. so tara, what have you been able to find out about what happened? >> reporter: well, crime scene investigators are on the way. in the meantime, police are guarding the scene until they arrive. if you take a look behind me, you can see the yellow tarp. that's where the victim was

found. next to it is a sleeping bag. that's where police believe he was sleeping here. this is morris street. it's an alleyway between harrison and bryant. police say around 5:00 this morning, a man walking by found the victim lying on the sidewalk bleeding. he suffered a puncture wound to the back of the head. it was a very grisly scene. he was rushed to san francisco general hospital and is in critical condition. at this point, we don't know how it all unfolded but police believe he was attacked. >> it could be any option. it could be a stabbing, a shooting. could have happened from a fight. but i'm not exactly sure. it's still under investigation. >> reporter: all we know about the victim, he's a white male, homeless between 35 and 45 years old. police are surveying the scene trying to piece together exactly what happened. they have this alley roped off and they are trying to figure out if there are any witnesses. there do not appear to be

surveillance cameras. at this point, police are really hoping some witnesses come forward. live from san francisco, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, tara. happening now arlington national cemetery is preparing for president obama's arrival ahead of this memorial day's ceremony. we want to take you live to -- take you live to the arlington cemetery. the guards are there. the president will place a wreath on the tomb of the unknowns at 8:00. he will deliver a speech at 8:20. we'll bring you those events live. this is video of last year's event. president obama has proclaimed today, a day of prayer for permanent peace. he's asked americans to observe a national moment of remembrance at 3:00. well, tori, today's memorial day holiday means changes for a lot of offices and businesses, banks and post

offices, they are closed. all federal, state, county and city offices including the courts are closed. contra costa county transit, sonoma county transit and the ace trains, they are not running today. b.a.r.t., caltrains, san francisco, muni, ac transit, golden gate transit vt -- and vta are running on sunday schedule. the santa clara valley transportation authority plans a special memorial day tribute for this afternoon. all of the buses and the light rail vehicles will stop for one minute at 3:00 this afternoon. 7:07. we want to check in with sal and see what's happening on the roads. still very quiet out there. we like it that way. don't get me wrong. i think if you will be driving out there. perhaps you have to go to work. at the very least, you will have a nice wait. no major problems getting into the city on the bay bridge which usually, of course, is

not this light on a monday but today is a holiday. san francisco, the same thing goes. there's no baseball game today at at&t park. the giants are playing over art the oakland coliseum. they are playing the as, should be a atte amth bay area baseball teams at 1:00. northbound, 101 as you drive through san jose, sunnyvale, cupertino and 280 and saratoga on 85, that looks very good. let's go to steve. >> the weather doesn't look very good if you are looking for sunshine and warm temperatures. end of the week. not today. a lot of high and mid-level clouds beginning to move in. cloudy to mostly cloudy pattern. giants and as, light rain, breezy as well. game time temperature, 64. 50s on the temperature. santa rosa has been coming up because the system has been moving -- has been moving in. the temperature is stuck. the unseasonal low last week is finally out of the picture.

along by this system. -- kicked .3 to .5 especially up on the north coast. it's a weaker part of the front. still, it's there. think it will drag across some clouds, as the system moves in cloudy, mostly cloudy, if you want to workout, play tennis or golf, go in the morning. rain later in the north bay and then south. cooler, breezy, elsewhere. you can see the system, most of it. there is a little bit of a split taking place there. there's a lot of moisture taking ail. rain to the north, a little bit to the south. some on the coast in in the form of drizzle. temperatures will be staying below average. 60s and very low 70s for almost everyone. maybe one more day for this. there will be more sun tomorrow. cloud cover comes in tonight and early tuesday. things look to turn around on wednesday and then warmer temperatures into the week.

stanford university is lifting a ban on hard alcohol during the summer session. the unpopular pilot program went into effect last year during those summer quarter. it banned hard alcohol in dorms even for students who are over the age of 21. the school implemented the ban amid concerns about high school students with stanford students over the summer. school officials are looking at other ways to address alcohol use on campus. 7:10. one week after those devastating tornadoes, one oklahoma city pays a special tribute to the victims. it's like a time where friends and family come together. >> the memorial attended by thousands and how the area is starting to rebuild. and a new place to stay and play. the northern california hotel and casino that could create hundreds of jobs near a popular concert venue.

cloudy to mostly cloudy skies. temperatures in the 50s. rain has started up in mendocino county. it will cloud up. 60 and 70. it is 7:12. new this morning, nato says an insurgent attack has killed a service member in eastern afghanistan. nato has not yet reed service member's nationallality. the death brings the international forces this month killed in afghanistan to 20. over all, casualties are down as foreign services pull back and allow afghan services to take the lead before nato ends its mission last year. last may a total of 44 nato troops died in afghanistan. we're learning more about what caused a deadly tour bus crash in mexico. officials say 16 people were killed when a tire blew causing the bus to hit a guardrail and

roll over. the bus was carrying tourists returning to mexico they from a trip to central mexico. officials say the bus dated back to the 1970s and was in poor condition. 7:13. new this morning in texas, a heartbreaking discovery by emergency responders in san antonio. they found the body of teenager reported missing in the flood water, the waters that stranded hundreds of people in their homes and cars. he was trying to cross a swollen creek and was swept away. >> like i said, i've never seen it like that. >> it's nothing i've ever experienced before. >> even worse, two women also died in all of this flooding. river levels are expected to start falling later today. 7:14. the town of moore, oklahoma, marking one week since that deadly ef-5 tornado killed 24 people and destroyed thousands

of homes. our reporter, rene marsh, is right there in moore to tell us how the victims are being remembered and show us the devastation left behind. rene? >> reporter: that's right, dave. good morning. you know, it's one week to the day that this violent tornado hit this area. we expect the scene here in moore to look a lot like this for days, weeks, even months. you are looking live right now as crews are pretty much digging through the rubble, starting that process of cleaning up and this weekend, they also started the process of healing. they honored the victims of this tornado. [singing] >> reporter: some of the youngest victims reminded the crowd at a sunday prayer church office that the future of oklahoma is bright. >> we will emerge stronger and better and be better people and

be a better state. >> reporter: president obama visited moore, oklahoma offering hugs and handshakes. >> i'm just the messenger here letting everyone here know that you are not alone that you have folks behind you. >> reporter: his sobering behinder of what's changed and what's been lost. >> last weekend, i would have never guessed that i would be talking to the president, you know, face to face. >> reporter: saturday, moore paused for an annual right of passage, graduation day. [ cheers ] >> reporter: the celebration of brief reprieve from reality. many graduates will spend their summer helping their families start over. >> starting to buy new things and rebuilding from scratch. we've been knocked down to the bottom and have to come back up. >> reporter: a process that will take billions of dollars and a lot of years and help the federal government says will

the brand new boardwalk reopens for business this memorial day weekend. governor chris christie will be with the president as he meets families and business owners. 7:17. investigators are looking for the cause of a deadly house fire that claimed the lives of two people outside sacramento. people living in the rancho cordova neighborhood say the fire started around 4:00 yesterday morning. they were awakened by crews for help. one neighbor tried to rescue the woman through a broken window. >> ran over there, looking through the window and they could see her shadow. she was saying, please help. he reached into the window and had her by her arm and shoulder, the roof started to let go, he let go and reached back in and i guess she was gone. >> officials are not releasing details about the -- details about the victims, they were. a man and a woman in their 70s and they had cats and birds. a casino could bring as many as 2,000 jobs to northern

california county with a high unemployment rate. the native american tribe hopes to build a hotel and casino resort near the sleeptrain am paw theater off -- amphitheater. >> this rights numerous wrong for our tribe and our people. >> the resort on would be the county's largest -- the resort would be the county's largest employer. the alcohol television comedy "arrested development" -- the hot television comedy "arrested development" is making a comeback, returning for a fourth season. you won't find it on network tv. you can watch it on the bay area-based streaming service,

from the boston marathon bombings triggered evacuations in mountain view, what police say they found made them evacuate for hours. >> reporter: we're live in san jose where a father was shot and killed near oak grove high school. you will hear from a young man who tried to help that man. and several ceremonies and events planned for this memorial day. how the bay area plans to remember the sacrifice of so many -- as "mornings on 2" continues. look at 'em.

it's been a haven't night on the streets of -- a violent night on the streets of san jose. police are investigating the shooting deaths of three people in four hours. janine de la vega is at the scene of the latest shooting and has new information from a neighbor who heard the deadly gunshots. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning, tori. this was very difficult for the neighbor because the man basically right in front of him. he was asking that victim, who is in his early 20s, if he believed in god and he said yes. right there in the grassy area where the dirt is dug up, that's where the man died. police now are back at the station trying to piece together evidence to help lead them to the person responsible. this happened at 10:15 on heys avenue near oakgrove high

school. neighbors heard yelling and officers arrived and saw a man suffering from at least one gunshot wound. one neighbor ran outside before police got to the scene. he told us the victim was black and he told them right before he died that he was a father. that neighbor it said it was very dramatic. >> i feel bad for that guy's families. he told me he had a daughter. that was one of the words he was able to utter before he passed away. >> reporter: police don't have a motive in this kate. there are still a lot of -- case. there are still a lot of unanswered questions. they don't know if the victim or the shooter knew each other. it's too early to tell if this is gang-related. all questions they are trying to answer. police tell us thises -- this is the 19th homicide of the year. coming up on "mornings on 2" in the next hour, we'll let you know how we rank as far as homicides this year compared to

last year. if we are ahead or down. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:30. that gunfire was just part of a violent night in san jose hours earlier. two people were shot to death on rhinehart drive on san jose's east side. police have just confirmed that both victims are teenaged boys. a neighbor says one of those boys was a good friend of her teenaged son. >> he's a nice boy. really nice and minds his own business. he hangs out with my son every day. and they go places and they talk to girls all of the time on the phone. >> police are still looking for suspect, they want to talk to one teenager spotted leaving the scene on a bicycle. oakland police out there searching for suspects who shot two people outside of a liquor store. it happened last night in west oakland, about 10:30 at 43rd and market. police say someone shot man and

a woman as they walked out of the liquor store. there were several shell casings at the scene. police say it's possible one of the victims may have shot back. both victims are listed in serious condition. we know the name of the woman what died in that crash involving a bus. according to "the chronic well, the woman is 36-year-old sara kline, a well-known burlesque performer. she was driving about 2:00 a.m., the car hit the center divide and then hit a party bus head on. her husband, a 43-year-old man, is now in critical condition. the chp said kline was not wearing a seat belt. dui is suspected. eight of the 18 people on their party bus suffered minor to moderate injuries. a bomb scare involving a pressure cooker prompted police to shut down several stores and buildings in mountain view. the scare affected the san antonio shopping center last

night. police say a neighbor noticed a pressure cooker which appeared to be hot outside of the lobby. the boston marathon bombs were made from pressure cookers. so as a precaution, everyone was hustled out. >> i happened to be the last person out of the safeway when they evacuated. my dog was in the car and they were concerned that i was gonna try to go back to my car and get the dog. >> one officer carried that dog to that woman kept outside of a perimeter set up by police. the pressure cooker turned out to be empty. everyone was allowed back in the center around 9:00 last night. police have arrested a 17-year- old from oregon after they discovered he planned to use bombs to blow up his high school. coming up at 7:45, how students are reacting to the arrest and the evidence found inside the suspect's home. 7:33. two americans killed in last year's benghazi, libya terror attack, they are gonna be

honored today in southern california. glen doherty and tyrone woods, they are former navy s.e.a.l.s from the san diego area. they were killed along with u.s. ambassador, chris stevens and shawn smith, also from san diego. black granite blacks honoring the -- marks honoring the s.e.a.l.s are being placed for them. the sacramento valley cemetery will be held. john garamendi will be there as the speaker. and then the congressman will go to another cemetery in vacaville. no matter where you are, there will be many ceremonies around the bay area commemorating memorial day. brian flores is in our newsroom. you can tell us some of the ones that are starting in a couple hours. >> yeah. some begin at 10:00. during the long weekend, the bay area is honoring military

members and families who have sacrificed so much to defend our country. ♪ >> [bell tolling] >> hundreds attended a ceremony at lands inn commemorating the 100 sailors and seven marines killed aboard the u.s.s. san francisco. several years have passed since then, but for the lessons -- some say the lessons remain. >> i can't imagine what somebody in combat could have gun through -- could have gone through. the, i haves were very enlightening and important to listen to. >> the events today in alameda, a ceremony will be held across the u.s.s. hornet aircraft carrier. there will be musing and a ceremony. the special ceremony and a parade are scheduled to begin at 1:00 this afternoon. ♪ >> meantime, the annual parade

at the san francisco cemetery starts this morning. the grand parade will be followed with remarks by nancy pelosi and ed lee. it also includes a 21-gun salute at noon. this is the 145th memorial day observance at the cemetery. also there will be a memorial day -- cemetery at point reyes national park commemorating those saving in the coast guard. and then there will be a lot boat ceremony and at the marin center's veteran auditorium and a ceremony in dan ville's oak hill park will be held. there are many more services held today and we'll highlight

those coming up. back to you. >> thank you. at 10:00 a.m., a cemetery will be held at the benicia cemetery. at 9:00 a.m., the veterans council will hold a cemetery at oak hill member pac and then another ceremony -- memorial park and another ceremony will be held at lone tree in hayward. since friday, law enforcement agencies across the bay area have been setting up checkpoints to catch drunk drivers. the officers have made 117 dui arrests. that's down from 136 last year. dui arrests are also down statewide. >> right now, you know, we've got a very high volume of officers working the coastal area. we're also trying to reduce our motorcycle and bicycle collisions that we've been having since the weather has

7:44. new information now on the collapse of that interstate bridge in washington state. washington's governor announced that the state is going to install temporary spans while a permanent replacement is built along i-5. the temporary span should be in place by mid-june according to the ntsb. the truck that hit the bridge

was 15 feet, 9 inches tall but the lowest clearance on the bridge is just 14 feet, 6 inches tall. however, there was no sign indicating that clearance and it's not required by state law. this is deadline week for caltrans and the metropolitan transportation commission as they decide whether to open the new span of the bay bridge on labor day weekend as scheduled. 32 seismic safety rods have cracked on the new bridge, prompting concerns and a possible delay on the opening. well, we're finding out new information about that oregon high school student arrested for plotting a columbine-style attack. police say grant accord planned to use bombs to blow up his school. police found six bombs in a secret compartment in his bedroom along with a check list, and a drawing of the school. students now say accord talked about bombs weeks before his

morning. a sergeant just told me the teenaged boy driving this car remains in surgery right now and has lost both of his feet as a result of the crash. a short time ago, police officers just expanded this crime scene quite a bit and pushed us back. we are told part of the reason there's the distinct possibility this young man may not survive given the severe injuries he suffered in this accident. the teenaged girl riding in the car with hill, the passenger also had severe injuries as well. the two were driving in this gold camry up alum rock near white when the car lost control and then plowed right in this tree. the tree came down on top of the car. the firefighters who first arrived here had to put the tree apart and then use the jaws of life to get those two teenagers out. this accident was at 2:45 in the morning. police say this car was going fast when it veered off the road. police are still trying to investigate and figure out if

it was a violent night on the streets of san jose last night. police investigating the shooting deaths of three people in four hours. ktvu's janine de la vega is at the scene of the latest shooting. so what's happening out there now, janine? >> reporter: dave, in the last hour, a man and a woman pulled you in a car and they wanted to take a look at the spot where a young man in his 20s had died. they wanted to know if there was their friend but their

man's identity has not been released yet. this happened at 10:15 last night on heys avenue, a block away from oakgrove high school. neighborhoods heard yelling and several gunshots. officers arrived and found a man either 20 to 25 years ole suffering from at least one gunshot wound. one neighbor ran outside before police got to the scene. he told us the victim was black and the victim told him right before he died that he had a daughter. that neighbor said it was traumatic to see him die and he witnessed his death. he wishes he could have helped save him. >> was looking for a gunman. i didn't see any. so i knew there was a victim because i seen someone run over there with a phone. i ran over to the guy and i asked hill, i was like, do you believe in god? he said yes, i told him to keep breathing. he was convulsing, gurgling a lot of blood. >> reporter: police say they don't have a motive in this case. there's still a lot of

san francisco police are investigating a brutal attack. it happened about 5:00 this morning on morris street. the victim was found in an alley. police are trying to find the weapon used to attack the man. police say that victim is now out of surgery but he's still in critical condition. happening now -- one of two teenagers very seriously rt hin tree in san jose is in surgery -- into a tree in san jose in surgery. alex savidge is live with more on the condition of the teenager. you are saying he could lose a foot or both feet, right? >> reporter: potentially both feet, that's what police are saying. he's in surgery right now. that's what police are telling us. this crash happened and they believe that speed was a factor in the accident. this car with two teenagers inside, including the young man who was driving slammed straight into this tree. you can see what's level of it here in this parking lot. i want to he is you -- i want

to show you video from early this morning. this gold camry was coming east on alum rock near white, where it veered off the road and took out the tree. firefighters to to come in and cut the tree apart just to get to the car and then they used the jaws of life to get the two men out. >> that girl who was the passenger is now in stable condition, i'm told, at the hospital but the driver may not survive. that's part of the reason that police just expanded the crime scene. >> usually in an accident like this, we're standing by to determine whether it will be a fightal accident. if it is a fatal accident, we have to keep all of the evidence. at that point, if it is a fatal accident, the traffic unit will come out and take over. >> reporter: police can't say at this point whether drugs or alcohol mayed a role in the -- played a role in the crash you. but they believe that speed did. so far the names and ages of

these teens are in the being released by police. this is right on alum rock in san jose right near white. you can see this is still a crime scene. this entire parking lot has been roped off by the san jose police. the car still in place right where it was when it crashed early in the morning. doctors at the hospital trying to save the life of the young boy rehind the wheel of the car. -- behind the wheel of the car. back to you. oakland police are searching for suspects in a shooting outside a liquor store. this happened in west oakland around 10:40 at 43rd and market streets. police say someone fired shots at a man and a woman as they walked out of the liquor store. there were several shell casings. police say it's possible one of the victims may have fired back at their attacker. both shooting victims are listed in serious condition. we now know the name of a woman who died yesterday in a

car involving a party crash on 101. the woman is 36-year-old sara kline, a well-known burlesque performer. the chp says kline's husband was driving about 2:00 this morning when their car hit a center divide and then hit a party bus head on. her husband is now in critical condition. thsaysp line was not wearing a seat belt and dui is suspected. eight of the 18 people on the party bus had minor to moderate injuries. san leandro police investigating a shooting right outside of a costco store. it happened in broad daylight yesterday afternoon in the parking lot of the store on davis street. the first police officers on the scene say there was evidence of several shots fired in an area packed with shoppers. but there were no reports of any injuries. police say everyone involved in the shooting was gone by the time they arrived on the scene. new this morning, power's back on, fullery restored to

homes and businesses in san francisco after wet weather caused utility poles to spark. pg&e says drizzle and dust on the power lines caused these fires and outages in san francisco's richmond, sunset and excelsior districts yesterday. as many as 2800 people lost their power at the height of that outage. a pressure cooker prompted the evacuation of a mountain view shopping center. the bomb square affected the villages in mountain view at 6:00 last night. police say a neighbor noticed a pressure cooker which appeared to be hot outside of an apartment complex lobby. the neighbor called police who called in the bomb squad. >> what comes to mind immediately is probably the boston marathon, the tragedy that happened back east, and we would like to avoid that here. >> the bombs in boston were made from pressure cookers. this pressure cook wears empty

-- was empty. police allowed everyone back in around 9:00 last night. stanford university now lifting a ban on hard alcohol during the summer session. it was an -- it was an unpopular pilot program that took effect last year. it banned hard alcohol in the dorms even for students who were over the age of 21. the school imposed the ban over concerns about high school students who live in the dorms with stanford students over the summer. they are trying to find other ways to deal with alcohol use on campus. this morning, the chp is searching for the driver who hit a teenaged bicyclist on a street. officials say the suspect may be driving a dark green honda civic. the teenager who was hit has minor injuries. it is minutes before 9:00. the u.s. supreme court is due to decide before the end of

june several closely-watched social issues, including same- sex marriage. the justices are debating -- are debating whether proposition 8 is constitutional. in a second case, the court will decide if the u.s. government's defense of marriage act can deny same-sex couples the same benefits as heterosexual couples. court observers say the ruling by the justices will likely represent baby steps and not a revolution in gay rights. >> the ruling may not be a huge gay rights victory at all but i doubt it will be a significant loss either. >> the court will rule on whether public schools can consider race when admitting students. a woman sued the -- sued the university of texas saying she was ejected because she's white. organizers of the gay pride parade facing criticism now plan to hold a public meeting on their controversial decision to revoke grand marshal status >

hame, shame, shame on pride! >> ktvu was the only crew there earlier this month when demonstrators became angry after they were kept out of a pride board meeting to debate the issue. that meeting was abruptcy cut short with only a few people allowed to comment. a public meeting is set for this friday at the metropolitan community church in the castro. state wildlife officials say they think they know why some deer are losing their fur. researchers say the problem appears to be nonnative lice that's attaching themselves to deer. those animals can look scrufffy or in some cases even bald. wild fiscal cliff officials say the deer may spend so much time grooming themselves, they become easy targets for coyotes or mountain lions. that's leading to a low survival rate for baby deer.
